Notes 1790

1. This is almost certainly Joseph the Revolutionary War spy. Click for census image
1. Given the age 16 breakdown, we can assume that Joseph had four sons born in or before 1774.
2. Since there are four females listed,, we can assume that he had at least three female children (of course, the remaining female would be his wife).
2. If James McCammon sold land to Samuel Cathcart, it should help us pin down the location where Samuel lived. But which Samuel Cathcart is this?
1. It's probably not the Samuel above in Spartanburg County
2. The deed paperwork says Samuel is a "yeoman from the state of Kentucky"... but I know of no Samuels who would have been from Kentucky.
3. The transaction was witnessed by Joseph Cathcart. This could be Joseph (the spy), it might also be Joseph, son of William and Mary Cathcart... but i think that's less likely.
3. Likely John Frampton (my fourth great grandfather), father of Martha MacLeod Frampton (1786-1830). Martha married Winborn Lawton, Jr.
4. Claremont County was in existence for only the first annual US census (and before). Its borders coincide with present-day Lee, Sumter and Darlington counties. see map
5. 5th GGF. Served during Rev. War.

Notes 1800

1. This enumeration is certainly a possible match for Mary being the widow of John Cathcart, Sr. (one of the "Big Four") It appears that the three males could be John Jr., Samuel, and David. Mary Cathcart's daughter, Mary, would be aged 16-25 in 1800. There is a James Moffett and a David McDill on the same page. Click here for image
2. Click here for image
3. Joseph and William listed right next to each other (about one quarter of the way down the page. Click here for image). Page also has David McCreight, Sr & Jr. and William McCreight. Also several Neelys.
1. First of all, Joseph Cathcart, Sr.'s enumeration has one male in the greater than 44 age category. Since this equates to a birth year before 1756, this is almost certainly Joseph Cathcart the revolutionary war spy. The other likely "suspect," would be Joseph son of William and Mary Cathcart. However, this Joseph was born about 1769, so the dates do not match.
2. William: this enumeration is quite interesting; first because it's right next to Joseph Cathcart, Sr.; and secondly because there are two males listed in the 16-25 age group (1774-1784).
1. Again, one would first try to connect this William with the William and Mary version... but there is little evidence that this William ever emigrated to the United States from County Antrim, Ireland. Nor for that matter, does his son William (born circa 1767) appear to match, as he was supposed to have also stayed in County Antrim, Ireland.
2. Given the above—along with the fact that the enumeration lists Joseph Cathcart, Sr and William right next door to each other—we might believe that this William is perhaps a son of Joseph Cathcart , Sr., and that the other male listed in the same age group is his brother.
3. See PDF worksheet covering probate records of a William Cathcart who died in nearby Chester County.
3. Hugh: this Hugh appears to be Hugh Cathcart , Sr. (1765-1808), son of William and Mary
4. Samuel Cathcart's daughter, Jane, married Archibald McCravey.1
5. This is likely John and Susannah Marshall Baskin in family.. John being the son of Andrew Baskin. however, there is another John Baskins enumerated in this census... see note 6 below
6. Given the similarity of this listing to the one above, I tend to believe that this is a duplicate entry for the same family. My current records to indicate that you John and Susannah should have had to surviving male children at the time of this census.
7. There is a Clement Stewart listed on this page and a Clement Stewart, Jr. listed two pages later. One of these is likely the husband of a daughter of Andrew Baskin—whose first name is unknown.
8. Although the age bracket does not quite match, I believe this is James Baskin, son of Andrew. Since James did not marry until 1804, it would make sense that he would be enumerated as head of household and with five slaves working on the property.
9. George and Sarah Wells were parents of Elizabeth Wells (1775-1854), who in 1804 would marry James Baskin.
10. James Brice--This is most likely James (1768-1845) and his first wife, Jane Wilson. The four males listed in the first column would be appropriate for his firstborn sons: Robert, James, William, and John. About eight years after this census, James would marry Mary Cathcart (daughter of John Cathcart of the "Big 4" Cathcart brothers).
11. James Faires/Faris (born about 1726 in County Antrim, Ireland,, died about 1802 in York District, South Carolina). Below are details from James' will:
1. FARIES (Faris), JAMES of York County, 5 Jan 1802
Wife: Jean
Son: James Faris
Son: Richard Faris
Grandson: Elias Faris
Son: William Faris
Son: Alexander Faris
Daughter: Margaret, married to David Strain
Daughter: Agness, married to Benjamin Garrison
Daughter: Jean, married to John Adare
Daughter: Susannah, married to John Faris
Daughter: Ann, married to James Faris
Executors: Wife, Jean and son, James Faris
Witnesses: James Faris, Richard Faris, John Kerr
Presented: 5 Mar 1802; Case 56 file #2498
12. See Footnote 11 in the 1810 census for information and map describing the the county/subdivisions within Sumter District.
13. David Strain, father of Elizabeth, who married Joseph Harvey Cathcart.
14. Artur Authur Cunningham

Notes 1810

1. This is almost certainly David Cathcart, (C1763-C1845, m. Melissa Hollinger). Note that the three girls would be his three daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Rosanna. I'm assuming that Margaret Jane died young. There is also a John Culp two households above David. We know that David and his sons sold land to Henry McKinney and John Culp. Further up the page there are a Samuel Gill and a Nancy McKinney--names which appear in a land sale in 1807 (see sold land link on Chester County page).
2. Note: Last several pages of the census have a listing of manufacturers (steel and cloth) with names and quantities. Names include James Baskin (cotton cloth: 870 yards), Thomas English, Mixons, Cunninghams, Cantys.
3. Males: 1 10-15, 1 16-25; Females: 1 16-25, 1 >45 (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/fairfield/census/1810/0184.gif)
4. Next Door: Archibald Young, James Williams, Jr.
5. Next Door: George Siefer, Samuel King
6. Page 215/i. 3 Next Door: Boyd, L. Jr.?, Mary Johnson, David DuBose (3), Robert Brailsford (6)
7. Salem County, Sumter District (William, James and John sons of Gilbert and Lucy Atkinson Croswell)
1. Lucy (age greater than 45) is listed as head of household indicating that her husband, Gilbert, has passed away. Given that three of her four sons are enumerated on this or the next census page, we might assume that the 16-25-year-old male is her son Adville Gilbert (1787-1862).
2. William: born about 1788
3. James Crosswell: not sure who the one male child born 1799 1810 would be. The male in the 26 – 44 box (1766-1784) matches James age. As far as the females: their daughter Elizabeth would have been less than 10 (1799-1810), and James wife Argent would have indeed been 16 to 25 (1784-1794).
4. John Crosswell: I need to do more research here. This enumeration indicates that John was younger than his brother James. Also, there are two females less than 10 years old, and for the moment I have no candidates in my database. However, I do have an exact birthdate for John's wife Sarah Kennedy: October 2, 1789. That date certainly matches the indicated 16-25 (1784-1794) age group in this listing.
8. General notes for Cathcarts in York County
1. Joseph Cathcart, Sr.
1. Given the inclusion of one male in the over 45 age category (i.e. birth year on or before 1765), this cannot be Joseph son of David Cathcart (the one who married Melissa Hollinger), because this Joseph was born in 1797 — and therefore too young to be involved in the purchase of land.
2. There was a Joseph Cathcart, son of William and Mary Cathcart, and born in 1769 who would therefore be too young to be this Joseph.
3. It is therefore likely that this is Joseph Cathcart the revolutionary war spy.
4. Who are the two males in the 16-25 age group? Is it possible that one of these young men was the same Allen Cathcart who witnessed the land tracts transaction by Joseph Cathcart, Sr.? see paragraph 8c below
2. Hugh Cathcart
1. Hugh is enumerated on the same page, right next to Joseph Cathcart, Sr. Since the eldest male listed in this enumeration is in the 25-45 age group (birth year 1766-1784), we can assume that would be Hugh's birth year range. This could not have been Hugh Cathcart, (born 1765, son of William and Mary Cathcart), since the Ebenezer church records indicates that this Hugh died on 28 March 1808.
3. Joseph Cathcart, Jr.
1. As with Hugh, this Joseph's enumeration's eldest male is in the 25-45 age group (birth year 1766-1784).William and Mary Cathcart had a son Hugh, born about 1769. However, if this Joseph was the son of William, why would he be a Junior? I believe this means that were not talking about the line descending from William and Mary Cathcart.
4. Tying together the above 1810 census enumerations with land purchases within three years of this census might provide a clue as to the identity of these three Cathcarts.
1. Bill of sale 475 acres on Fishing Creek in Chester County, from Joseph Cathcart to John Cathcart signed (by Joseph Cathcart) 2 March 1806—witnessed by Joseph, Hugh, and Allen Cathcart. Sworn before the judge November 20, 1807. Click here for a transcription of the bill of sale. All the Cathcart men associated with this purchase said that they were residents of Chester County, South Carolina. Since Fishing Creek is located in both Chester and York counties (click here for map), it is certainly possible that these gentlemen would be enumerated in York County in 1810, while describing themselves as Chester County residents three years earlier for this transaction.

It is most interesting to note the signers and witnesses to this transaction. We have Joseph Cathcart senior and junior, Hugh Cathcart, and perhaps most interestingly, Allen Cathcart.
2. Bill of sale 113? acres (along Fishing Creek), Joseph and Susannah Cathcart along with John McCurry to William Porter, signed August 18, 1810. Click here for a transcription of the bill of sale.

First of all, I'm assuming that Susannah is Joseph's wife. Secondly, given that this transaction occurs three years after the transaction above, I'm assuming this is Joseph Cathcart, Sr.; and if true,, this would indicate the name of Joseph's wife for the first time.
9. James S and Mary Cathcart Brice
10. Next Door: Jessy Rhames, Howard Richburg?, Michael Rosner?
11. Sumter District was broken into three counties: Salem, Clarendon, and Claremont. See the map below for basic position of the counties.

1820 Notes

1. Listed as Wadmalow
2. David and Samuel Cathcart -- Sons of John (B4) but where's their father, John?
1. David (about 30) is the lone male 26-44, as he is not yet married, the female in the over 45 might be his mother.
2. Samuel. Son William (b. ~1819) would be the <10 male, and Samuel would be one of the 26-44 males, but who's the other one? His brother John, Jr. disappeared in a SC swamp, so maybe that happened after the 1820 census. His wife Nancy is the female 25-44.
3. After arriving in SC in time for War of 1812, Robert has has 150+ slaves. Rest of family is living in Chester County.
4. Given that there are two males listed in the 26-45 age group (corresponding with a year of birth of 1793-1804), there is an excellent possibility that the two are brothers. If this is true, then there's an excellent chance that William Cathcart would be the son of Hugh Cathcart, Sr. (1768-1808). The other male listed is likely Harvey Johnson Cathcart (1799-1839).
1. If the above information is correct, then the female listed in the 26-45 age group would be Nancy Cathcart, the as yet unmarried sister of the above William and Harvey.
2. Note: see Joseph Harvey Cathcart... given the closeness and names and places, perhaps these are the same individuals.
5. James Cathcart (son of Samuel "Spartanburg Cathcarts")
6. James Cathcart, Sr.
7. John Cathcart—son of James in note 6 above
8. This census page includes many enumerations of interest (image):
1. Faries (Faires/Faris): Thomas, James
2. Margaret Strain: This is very likely Margaret Faris Strain (born 1763, and daughter of James and Jean Agnes Adair Faires/Faris, wife of David Strain). David and Margaret were parents of Elizabeth, who married Joseph Harvey Cathcart, Sr.
3. Miller: Joseph, Sr.; Joseph, Jr.; and John
9. Advill, John and William are three sons of Gilbert and Lucy Atkinson Crosswell
1. Advill Gilbert Crosswell
10. Likely John Cathcart, son of Samuel Cathcart. Although John was born about 1785 (and would therefore fit in the 26-44 age group), the lack of male children is puzzling as John should have had at least two boys by the time of the 1820 census. Also, I have no record of any female children.

Notes 1830

1. a. Original appears to be "Cathkartz" is also transcribed as "Cathhart" in other sources. William & his wife would be b. 1789-1800 based on the single entries in the male and his wife 1799-1810. Neighbors: Samuel M. Watson , Daniel Jones, Isaac A. & William D. Garrison. This William appears to be too young to be the William m. Rachel Neely. A more likely candidate is William m. Jane Black, son of Hugh (from the Mecklenburg line/William & Mary). Also note the Garrisons living close by. William and Jane's son James m. a Sarah Garrison.

b. Dr. H J [Harvey Johnson] Kathcart, age 20-30, and 2 women aged 50-60. Harvey was the son of Hugh and Agnes Cathcart, of the William and Mary line. Also on page: William Fairies, James Wilson, William Neely
2. Has no listings until 190 slaves--perhaps this was only slave quarters?
3. This is likely the widow of Adam McWillie (1766-1827). The male aged 15-20 is probably a grandson, or perhaps her son Abram with the wrong age listed.
4. James and son John listed next door to each other, Robert separated by about five names.
5. John's (James' eldest son) family is as follows: Males: 1 Richard, 2 Robert & William, 1 James; Females: 2 Margaret & ?, 1 ?, 1 Nancy, 1 20-30 sister Nancy?, 1 30-40 wife Mary
6. the "6" is difficult to read, but matches with the total number on the next page.
7. Samuel Cathcart. Most likely John's (Big4) son, however who are all the underage males? My records only show two males William b. c 1819 and Samuel N. b. c1829. Are these perhaps nephews?
8. Robert B. Brice (1791-1871) and wife Margaret Simonton Brice (1801-1843) and family.
9. a. Adville Gilbert Crosswell (1787-1862) uncle of John J Crosswell.
b. John Crosswell (1786-1863) another uncle of John J Crosswell
10. Thomas Reese English, Sr. (1806-) great-grandfather of Sonny Cooper--second husband of Ann Sinkler 'Mitt' Baskin.

5. James Burchell Richardson (1806-1860), aged 34. The female age 60-70 is probably his mother, Floride Bonneau Peyre Richardson who died in 1844.
6. Richard Charles Richardson (1815-1877) and his wife Eleanora Norvelle Spann and their daughter, Anne Sinkler Richardson.
7. I believe this is Anne Cantey Sinkler Richardson (C1773-1864), wife of James Burchell Richardson Sr. (who died in 1836). she is living next door to her son, Richard Charles Richardson.
8. Best guess is this is Julia Anna Richardson, 1818-1849, who will later marry James Burchell Richardson.
