Federal census lost for all counties of the marshal's district of East
Tennessee: including Blount, Knox, McMinn, Monroe where we would likely find
early Cathcart settlers.
In 1820, Franklin & Warren Counties bordered each other
(Coffee & Grundy not yet created), in south-central part of
state.
John Cathcart
Assuming that John was the head of household and
not older than 80, that would make his birth year 1740-1775.
Carolyn Owens asserts that John is father of
Allen (the one listed in neighboring Warren County). She also says
that John is the same one who shows up in Mecklenburg County, NC in the
1810 census.
More research needed to place John
with an appropriate Cathcart line.
With the oldest male listed as 80-90
(1739-1750), this matches data for
Joseph
Cathcart, the Rev. War spy. McMinn County is just west of Monroe County;
but Joseph was supposed to be living in Monroe County.
There are also children (a male b.
1819-1825, and a female b.1824-1830) and a younger female
(b. 1799-1810), indicate a younger family with a widowed
mother. More than likely, this is a daughter or
daughter-in-law with her two children.
David Cathcart
was b. 1779-1790. David is listed as the head of
household, and since the eldest of the other males is 15, he
must be the eldest as well (i.e. there is not another older
male/father living in the household.
David is sometimes called "Daniel"
due to a single transcription of an
Knox County, Tennessee marriage record, which shows "Rodea" Anderson marrying
"Daniel" Cathcart on the exact day that Rhoda Anderson m.
David Cathcart in Monroe County. I'm now nearly certain that this is an
erroneous transcription, and not another Daniel or Rhoda.
Regiment 67, Monroe County. Not sure of exact location of this "Regiment."
The eldest female listed (30-40) matches
nicely with Rhoda Anderson Cathcart in the 1840 census below.
Alexander Mullins, who vouched for Joseph
Cathcart in his Rev. War pension statement, also appears on this
page. If he was a neighbor of Joseph, and Joseph was alive
in 1830... why can't we find him? At the least, this is an
indication that David was the son (or perhaps grandson) of Joseph
Cathcart, Sr.
William Cathcart
Tipton County is on the far west part
of the state, bordering on Arkansas.
Given that there are were two males
(aged 20-30: b. 1789-1800) and no females enumerated, this
could very well be two brothers.
Giles County is west of Lincoln and Franklin counties (central) on AL
border.
This enumeration appears to be for John C
Cathcart and family. The eldest male listed in the 50-60
age group (1779-1790) matches fairly well with the known
estimates for his date of birth.
The male children listed match fairly
well with the ages for Allen Joseph, Alexander, and John.
Presumably, his eldest son, Franklin Nicholas (who married about
1832) would be found in another census in 1840.
Many online records indicate that John's
father was Joseph Cathcart, Jr. (who married Janet Macandless).
If this is true, there is much evidence suggesting that this
Joseph, Junior is the sons of Joseph Cathcart , Sr., the
revolutionary war spy.
This appears to be James Allen Cathcart (c1814-1884, m. Cynthia Hammontree).
One online source indicates that James
Allen was born in Morganton. Given its location and history,
it's very likely that Morganton was in Blount County in 1840 and
in Monroe County for subsequent censuses. Hence James Allen
could stay in the exact same location and still be enumerated in
a different county in the next census. Blount county is just north and east of
Monroe county.
Neighbors on each side: Phillip and Nancy Hammontree.
Rhoda (1790-1850) is wife/widow of David Cathcart (1790-1830,
see 1830 census above). David
is possible son of Joseph (Rev Spy).
Need more info on specific locations of
districts in the 1850 census.
I don't believe that the different spellings
of the name Cathcart/Cithcart/Kithcart indicate that these are different
families. It is more likely a reflection on the enumerator's
spelling technique and/or the degree of literacy of the Cathcarts
enumerated.

Another presentation showing John & Louisa
plus Joseph & Ann on the same page
The 57 year old Rody Cathcart is almost
certainly, Rhoda "Anderson" Cathcart who was enumerated as Head of
household in the 1840 census for Monroe County.
With the exception of his marriage bond to
Ms. Hammontree (where his name is listed as "James A. Cathcart"),
first name is given as "Allen."
Given that Cyntha/Cynthia's name
only appears with "Allen Kithcart and Alen Cathcart, I'm
assuming his middle name was Allen, and that's the name he
preferred throughout his adult life.

John C and Elizabeth Bailey Cathcart. A
descendant of John C. Cathcart is a very close yDNA to me. Also,
need to try to track down a possible sister (Margaret Bailey) who
married Robert Allen Cathcart.
Tipton County

James W Butler 26 Kentucky
Martha Cathcart 50 Pennsylvania
Martha J Butler 18 Tennessee
Tipton Notes:
Although her age is a decade off, this might be the wife of William Cathcart, who appears as head of household
in this county from 1830-1840. Perhaps James is her son in-law.
Warren County
Warren Notes:
This is likely Robert Allen Cathcart and his
second wife Sarah J [Freeman] Brown. North Carolina marriage records
indicate that Sarah first married James H Brown (July of 1828) and then
Robert Allen Cathcart in May of 1834. Both marriages are documented as
having occurred in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Madisonville Democrat, Friday, February 7, 1896, Page 4:
"Town Talk---Mrs. Cathcart, widow of Jos. Cathcart, died at her home
near
Hopewell Springs Friday. She was about 85 years old. She was a
kind-hearted
Christian woman and a host of friends mourn her death."
Joseph Cathcart, came from near Loudon, and married Annie Denton. He
had one brother, named Allen who lived in the same section, near Loudon.
Allan had one daughter who married David Brooks and one son named
George. Some relatives of Joseph Cathcart, lived in Georgia.
Joseph and Annie Cathcart were not the parents of any children. There is
not any record of their ages but it is thought that they were between 85
and 90 years old when they died.
(by
Lawrence McConkey, Englewood, TN) also see notes for
Cathcart Family Cemetery below
Note: Based on the above, the likeliest
candidate for Joseph's brother is
Hugh A. Cathcart (perhaps the A is for Allen). That's
because I show his daughter Vernice married David C. Brooks.
Hugh also had a son named George.
The Cathcart Family Cemetery was established on the farm of
Joseph and Annie Cathcart at their request. They willed their farm
to the Denton family. It is on the J. F. McCracken farm which is
located about 4 1/2 miles East of Madisonville on the road leading
to Hopewell Springs.
