C & RD Cathcart are exact matches in the 111-marker test.
According to the Family Tree DNA TiP report,
an exact match at the 111-marker test equates to a 95.04% chance of
a common ancestor in four generations, and a 99.75% chance of
reaching that Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) in eight generations.
However, once we update the Tip report page to
reflect the fact that C and RD do not have a common ancestor in six
generations (as indicated above), the results are as follows:
MRCA in 7 generations ( i.e. Samuel and
William are brothers): 77.72%
MRCA in 8 generations ( i.e. Samuel and
William are first cousins): 89.48%
MRCA in 9 generations ( i.e. Samuel and
William are second cousins): 95.04%
MRCA in 10 generations ( i.e. Samuel and
William are third cousins): 97.66%
That result is a bit surprising given the fact
that two Cathcart yDNA participants, whom I know to be fifth cousins
have a genetic distance of three on a 67-marker test.
